It is a kind of love, is it not?
How the cup holds the tea,
How the chair stands sturdy and foursquare,
How the floor receives the bottoms of shoes
Or toes. How soles of feet know
Where they’re supposed to be.
I’ve been thinking about the patience
Of ordinary things, how clothes
Wait respectfully in closets
And soap dries quietly in the dish,
And towels drink the wet
From the skin of the back.
And the lovely repetition of stairs.
And what is more generous than a window?

What’s more generous than a window? A bed!

Wow – the patience of ordinary things. Makes my mind wander recklessly into unknown and unexplored territory. Wonderfully provocative!

An appreciation, a trust for those who make our lives easier, by designing, by working with their hands, these craftsmen present us with the utilitarian items of everyday life…”How the cup holds the tea” how our cold hands are warmed on those cups, as we steady ourselves, glancing across the table waiting for the phone to ring to bring us news from halfway across the country…of a loved one’s status…the tea is sipped, the strong flavor jolting, keeping one present, in- focus, in hope…
