“We bump against another mystery: the inrush of power and light, the canary that sings on the skull. Unless all ages and races of men have been deluded by the same mass hypnotist (who?), there seems to be such a thing as beauty, a grace wholly gratuitous…”

Perhaps a grace totally inexplicable…but ‘gratuitous’? Against this mysterious, gorgeous backdrop of the ocean and one boy/man? Not so sure (with all due respect for and delight in Annie Dillard)

There is something about the power of the ocean that mesmerizes me. The sound, the beauty, the power. But I think the guy on the bottom is a little too close.

Smiling. Ocean has the same impact on me. And yes, he is a wee bit close.
