Leaving the doctor,
The whole world looks different

  2. After a surgery, on the day of my return to my job, I arrived a bit late. Everybody else was inside, working away. As I stepped out of my car, I remember so clearly the cool dampness of the air – refreshing – and the sound of little kids on the playground next door to the school district office where I worked. I stood, breathing the air, looking around, so disoriented with appreciation that I might have been pulling a Lazarus. I walked toward the back door, enjoying this oddness, reveling in how much I love my earthly existence, privileged to be “returning.” Here’s what Marilynne Robinson said about it, speaking through the character of John Ames:

“This is an interesting planet. It deserves all the attention you can give it. I know this is all apparition compared to what awaits us, but it is only lovelier for that. There is a human beauty in it…I don’t imagine any reality putting this one in the shade entirely…”

Thanks, David, for all of the beauty you continually share with us.

  3. What I like about this haiku is that it leaves everything open. Whatever lines would follow, may be different for each person. The use of the word “autumn” suggests that we should hurry up and savour as much of life as we can.
