I’ve read hundreds of books.  And I remember what?  Snippets.  Particles.  Fragments. Crumbs. Smidgens. Specks. Morsels. Bits.  Traces.  A messy mosaic of something. Adding up to a little more than nothing. A cacophony of deafening alarm bells ringing out to me. Wake up!  Slow down!  Listen!  All banging around.  But coincidences.  And synchrodestiny.  Are crumbs that resurface with frequency. The culprit?  A Deepak Chopra book picked up while browsing at a Barnes & Nobles bookstore on a bitterly cold day over ten years ago.

When you live your life with an appreciation of coincidences and their meanings, you connect with the underlying field of infinite possibilities. This is when the magic begins. This is a state I call synchrodestiny, in which it becomes possible to achieve the spontaneous fulfillment of our every desire. Synchrodestiny requires gaining access to a place deep within yourself, while at the same time awakening to the intricate dance of coincidences out in the physical world. When a coincidence arises, don’t ignore it. Ask yourself, What is the message here? What is the significance of this? You don’t need to go digging for the answers. Ask the question, and the answers will emerge. “Oh, so that’s what it was all about!” The key is to pay attention and inquire.

Then the coincidences start to line up.  I read three articles/posts in a matter of 48 hours…that leave their mark on me.

And then this excerpt from an exceptional Peggy Noonan WSJ article (“When Childhood Fears Come True“) where she quotes Eugene Kennedy, the 85-year old professor emeritus at Loyola University of Chicago who is reflecting on the Newtown tragedy:

“We’re all on a hero’s journey,” said Mr. Kennedy, from where we began to where we will end. The hero faces challenges along the way. We are like King Arthur’s knights, entering the forest each day without a cut path, and “finding our way through is what we are called to do.” Here, Mr. Kennedy suggested, faith offers not an explanation but the only reliable guide. “Jesus said, ‘I am the way.’ That is not a metaphor.”

So Deepak.  I’ve asked the question(s).  I’m listening.  I see the coincidences. Not sure the answers have emerged.  But I do believe that The Believer Of Convenience is being worked…

  2. These invisible dots that somehow connect on a visceral level…that feeling that you can’t explain but you know is real. The serendipitous, invisible string that winds its way among and between people that I otherwise never would have met, yet who have given me more than I ever could have asked for, let alone knew I needed. Yes pal – that includes you, and I know you know that. Thank you for introducing me to the concept of Synchrodestiny. Thank you even more for being one of those treasured coincidences that you reference above.

  5. David, thanks for a thought provoking post. Unfortunately, I am one who doesn’t use faith as a basis for my existence. It seems to lead to a life built on hope. As Joseph Campbell said “I don’t have to have faith, I have experience. I think as a child I was told by most adults in my life to rely upon faith as a basis for living. I found that too metaphysical for me personally as I got older. I came to rely upon my experiences.

    I think as a human we all find a certain map that we can rely on to lead us through this journey of life. Mine is just less existential and more empirical and experience based.

  6. Very interesting, David. Serendipity, coincidence,luck, kismet, karma, fate–however one chooses to frame it up, I believe that sometimes things happen for a reason, and while one may not be able to explain them, if one is open to the possibilities, wondrous things can happen. Special people come into your life who enrich your world and understand you intrinsically; new opportunities appear where you least expect them; you glance up to the sky and see a carpet of stars that takes your breath away and reminds you how very precious each moment is, and so it goes. I, too, will keep listening….

  8. I am inspired by Mr. Deepak Chopra in an astounding way and I loved the idea of synchrodestiny but still I haven’t managed to master reading the answers. I would like to share few of his quotes that I love the most:

    1.Instead of thinking outside the box, get rid of the box.
    2.Whatever relationships you have attracted in your life at this moment, are precisely the ones you need in your life at this moment. There is a hidden meaning behind all events, and this hidden meaning is serving your own evolution.
    3.When you struggle with your partner, you are struggling with yourself. Every fault you see in them touches a denied weakness in yourself.
    4.You will be transformed by what you read.
    5.There are no accidents… there is only some purpose that we haven’t yet understood.
    6.If you and I are having a single thought of violence or hatred against anyone in the world at this moment, we are contributing to the wounding of the world.
