“The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.”

Sadly, this is oftentimes true. I’ve known a couple of these people, and losing them was doubly difficult,….

Only Hemingway could take something that beautiful and make it depressing.

Hilarious. He does state “sometimes destroyed” and not all times. Look at the beauty and the promise… 🙂

Interesting. I read The Paris Wife and the more I learned about his first wife, the more I liked her. The more I learned about Hemingway, the less I liked him.

The Paris Wife — IMO a watered down, slanted recounting of their story. I read it then reread A Moveable Feast and The Sun Also Rises. Felt better about Hemingway, Hadley — life…. He was among other things a Cad — admittedly. She was not the best wife near as I can tell. Lost the suitcase full of his work (why did she bring it all?) Showed up after they’d been apart without the birth control measures the couple were used to counting on. Neither of them was perfect. But Hemingway was probably the better writer.

This has been in my mind on and off today. I just shared it on Facebook saying:
“I’m not sure that people with the virtues Hemingway describes so well are any more venerable than the rest of us. I suppose if one of these paragons expects to be rewarded fully disappointment may easily set in.”

Not venerable — vulnerable of course. ;>)

In the search to find out who we truly are, there is a point where we are vulnerable, exposed. But in discovering who we really are, such things no longer hurt us. Ultimately the telling of the truth, is to oneself, and this leaves us open and exposed. Beauty, truth, courage, sacrifice- this is the journey all those to their destiny must tread..often wounded, sometimes destroyed.
