Are you an Internet Addict?

OK.  Time to fess up.  Are you one of the eight?

  • “Internet addiction affects one in eight Americans.”
  • “Studies have shown that addicts (to internet) have 10%-20% surface area brain damage.”
  • “2012 Survey of American Women found that 34% check their smartphone before getting out of bed, 21% wake up in the middle of the night to check Facebook, 27% check Facebook while on the toilet.”
  • “Students who tried to disconnect for 24 hours: It felt like some sort of withdrawal; I most likely have an addiction; I really panicked; Media is my drug.”

  3. Any data on people with 10-20% brain damage just on general principle? I think that’s my category…:-). Wonderful post as always,,,

    • Interesting. You locked in on same factoid. I was going to put a smart alec comment stating well if it’s 10-20% “surface” brain damage, how much deep brain damage is being inflicted. 🙂 Yes, how can they possibly no this?

  4. I’m not one of the eight…yet. Equal to cocaine & alcohol addiction is amazing. Glad you found this as it’s a daily battle with 12 year old. Lately have given him only one hour on the computer after school cause the longer he is on the more “brain dead” I tell him he is going to be. LOL..can’t wait to show him.

Thank you for posting this, Dave. I can breathe easy now – according to this, I’m NOWHERE CLOSE to being addicted. But you hit a nerve (you can ignore my comment on your hockey post) – obviously (“methinks she doth protest too much”) – it’s good to take a step back and keep these things in check.
I am worried about the kids, too. It’s a constant battle.

  9. Very enlightening. I think I have the proclivity for such an addiction, which is one reason I’ve yet to get a smartphone–I just don’t want the temptation. As it is, it’s 4:30 in the morning, I’m reading email, and getting ready to share this fabulous post on my Facebook page. ;-). Thx for the tweak, David!

  16. David, I had to conciously reduce my time with blogging and tweeting about a month ago and set aside more time for face-to-face interactions with folks in my life. Because I have some residual oral (non-repairable) damage from surviving a murder attempt some years ago, I was hiding from the folks I communicated with in front of the computer! The people who really want to be with me, as a whole person, just forget about the lower half of my face after a few encounters!
