Saturday Morning

weekend,sleep,chill,rest,

The weekday frenzy slows to a drip.
A quiet sets in.
Zeke jumps on the bed, curls once, twice and falls, leaning into me. And sighs.
Going Down. Down. Down.
The great Unwind commences.

I want to spend Saturdays and Sundays

car ride

“I’m sick of watching the shirts with sleeves hang lonesome in my closet, I want to put them on and let you take them off. I want to wear the kinds of things that don’t slip off in an instant, the kinds of things with zippers and buttons and layers and depth. I want to feel soft, I want the comfort of a comforter, I want to spend Saturdays in bed with all the windows open.

I want to spend Sundays in cars with the windows open, too, driving to fields where apples and pumpkins grow. I want to taste the thick of fall in my mouth, in pies and brews and hot coffee. I want confusion over whether or not to wear a jacket and confusion over what hue that tree was three weeks ago, I want everything to change so that I can feel like there’s reason to be alert, like there’s a reason to wake up again.”

“A” vs. “B” vs. “C”

Indexed,chart,free time,work,passion,writer,artist,

Two questions: Which one of the four below are you? (Assuming you are one of the four.)  Which one is optimal?

  1. “A” > “B” = No “C”
  2. “A” < “B” = No “C”
  3. “A” + “B” = Some “C”
  4. “P” =  “J” = No “C”

Where ‘A’= Time Spent On What You Love to Do.
Where ‘B’= Time Spent on Your Job.
Where ‘C’= Amount of Your Free Time.
Where ‘P’= What You Love To Do.
Where  ‘J’ = Your Job.

August 13 (today), 1851: I am dissolved in the haze

Thoreau, Henry David Thoreau

In the journal entries recorded in subsequent weeks and months, we meet with no passages quite so ornate or imposing as this epiphany entered on August 13, today, in 1851…

Thoreau made the following entry under the heading “Drifting”:

“Drifting in a sultry day on the sluggish waters of the pond, I almost cease to live – and begin to be.  A boat-man stretched on the deck of his craft, and dallying with the noon, would be as apt an emblem of eternity for me, as the serpent with his tail in his mouth.  I am never so prone to lose my identity.  I am dissolved in the haze.”

~ Professor Alan D. Hodder, Thoreau’s Ecstatic Witness (p.63). From Henry David Thoreau’s journal entries on August 13, 1851.

You’re always in a rush

hurry, rush, frenzied

You’re always in a rush,
or else you’re too exhausted to have a proper conversation.
Soon enough,
the long hours,
the traveling,
the broken sleep
have all crept into your being and
become part of you,
so everyone can see it,
in your posture,
your gaze,
the way you move and talk.

Water

photography

Circa 1998.

Miami.

July.

Sundays.

Eric is four. Relentless. “Come on Dad. It’s time to go swimming.” Pulling on my hand. “Come on Dad. Dad, come on!”

The marble floor in the bathroom is cool and smooth on our bare feet. I watch him struggle tugging on his suit. His little white bottom contrasting against his milk chocolate tan lines. He lets out a whimper in frustration as he can’t pull on his swim shirt.

We step outside.

We had lived in Miami for four years. The sweltering summer heat was still a shock. Swallowing up oxygen. Mixing with the heavy pool chlorine…filling nostrils and lungs.

10am. 91F. And there is still August to go.

Just for a little while, stop thinking about all the problems, crises, tasks. everything that’s pulling and pushing on us. Be in that quiet space.  After all these years, some of us still need permission to let go.

Si Says…Chill

Yes, I watch Duck Dynasty.  My guilty pleasure.  It is on A&E channel RIGHT NOW.  “Duck Dynasty broke records in its third season.  It is the second most watched television series behind “The Walking Dead.”   In the 18-49 demographic, “Duck Dynasty” had a 4.3 rating, beating “American Idol,” which had a 3.2 rating.”  (Over 8,000,000 viewers watched the season premiere.)

“Duck Dynasty is a reality (comedy) television series on A&E. It shows the lives of the Robertson family, who became wealthy from their family-operated business, Duck Commander, operated in West Monroe, Louisiana, which makes products for duck hunters, primarily the duck call named Duck Commander. The Robertson men, brothers Phil and Si, and Phil’s sons Jase, Willie, and Jep, are known for their long, flowing beards.  The business began in a dilapidated family shed, where Phil Robertson spent 25 years making duck calls from Louisiana cedar trees. His son Willie is now the CEO of the company.”

“I also painted a study of a seascape, nothing but a bit of sand, sea, sky, grey and lonely—sometimes I feel a need for that silence—where there’s nothing but the grey sea—with an occasional seabird. But otherwise, no other voice than the murmur of the waves.”

Sunday afternoons…

fireplace, couch, lazy, afternoon, relax, peace, zen

“The way my Sunday afternoons go, I end up doing a little bit of various things, none very well. It’s a struggle to concentrate on any one thing. This particular day, everything seems to be going right. I think, Today I’ll read this book, listen to these records, answer these letters. Today, for sure, I’ll clean out my desk drawers, run errands, wash the car for once. But two o’clock rolls around, three o’clock rolls around, gradually dusk comes on, and all my plans are blown. I haven’t done a thing; I’ve been lying around on the sofa the whole day, same as always.”

~ Haruki Murakami

Murakami is one of my favorite authors (Kafka on the Shore; The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle; Norwegian Wood).  In addition to being an award winning and prolific writer, he’s a marathoner and triathlete.  If he lands here on Sunday afternoons, I’m good. :)

The Ocean is the most elemental…

The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach. I have heard them all, and of the three elemental voices, that of ocean is the most awesome, beautiful and varied.

Easing into Friday Night with Céu & Herbie

We all know the legendary Herbie Hancock.  Céu is a Brazilian singer-songwriter.  “Céu reached unprecedented chart numbers for a Brazilian female artist—1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers (New Artist) Chart, 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 1 on Billboard’s World Music charts. In 2008, Céu received a Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary World Music Album” of 2007 for her debut album Céu.

Friday night with Andrea…

We were introduced to Andrea Bocelli at a concert in Miami.   Now the American Airlines Arena isn’t a night with Andrea in Tuscany…but the evening was memorable nonetheless.  There are those that perform – and then there is Andrea Bocelli.  A man in a league of his own.   Several weeks later, I recall driving over the Miami causeway out to Key Biscayne.  It was a blistering summer, Sunday afternoon.   The sun roof was open.  There was acqua blue velvet water glistening all around me.  Warm tropical winds rushing through the car.  And Andrea belting out this song.  Andrea and me on Key Biscayne…fantasy island.

Friday night in Tokyo with Kem…

Years ago, I’m walking back to my hotel on a sultry Friday night in Tokyo.  Its been a grueling week.  I’ve been away from home for several weeks.  I’m dragging.  Friendly, safe country – but never quite at ease among strangers, away from my own bed.  I don’t recall the year.  I don’t remember the hotel.  But, I do remember this unforgettable Kem tune drifting out of the lounge.  I slump into a soft, cushy chair along the window and order a drink.  I ask the bartender if he wouldn’t mind playing the song again.  He indulges.  And I proceed to be immersed by “Love Calls” while I watch the Tokyo evening pass me by.  It feels like yesterday…

Years ago, I attended a conference at Dana Point, CA and ran on a beach that looked strikingly similar to this photo.  I was listening to “Chill” music provided by the hotel.  I don’t remember much about the conference.  But, this image of the ocean, the waves crashing on the shoreline, the overcast skies, and this song remain indelibly present with me.

Here’s Rachel Lloyd singing “Breather 2000” from the album called Chill – Dana Point.
