“Memorize places,” his uncle had told him. “Settle your eyes on a place and learn it. See it under the snow, and when first grass is growing, and as the rain falls on it. Feel it and smell it, walk on it, touch the stones, and it will be with you forever. When you are far away, you can call it back. When you need it, it is there, in your mind.”
― Tony Hillerman, The Ghostway

What a shot.
I walk more or less the same route everyday, because it’s the only relatively green and relatively quiet route in my area. I love witnessing the differences in this route between the seasons, but I’m going to pay closer attention to the tiny changes each day. Thank you.

Thanks Laila. Sounds like a great plan.

This passage reminds me that we often are not very observant. We need to make more of an effort to see, smell, feel, hear, and touch things to remember them better. Much of the time, we look without seeing.

I think it is most people every day of their lives. Have you ever tried to describe what a person looked like or was wearing when you are trying to recall an incident? Amazing what we saw, but it didn’t register.
But yes, a lot of things were different “pre-covid.”

Even before May 5th 2020, DK!
I still recall details of all your writing series, Walking Cross Town, and driving North and South on I90, among so many others.
I was sitting on the train to downtown yesterday morning trying to dig the details, and read between the lines like you do. How present you are for you to see all that you did, and still do.

And you have made Cove Island Park our familiar place…but seems like it’ll never be fully known! And I still remember the subway and car trips. You really invite us to join you…Thanks!
